Contract Achievement:

Since 2007, MBD has consistently demonstrated its expertise and competitive edge by successfully winning this contract each time it was retendered on the open market in 2009, 2014, 2019, and again in 2024 securing another 9-year contract. Our ability to continually re-secure the contract underscores our ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional value and high-quality results, as well as our adaptability and deep understanding of the evolving requirements of the client. Each retendering process brought new challenges and opportunities, and MBD consistently distinguished itself with competitive pricing, a proven track record, and the ability to meet or exceed client expectations. This sustained success is a testament to our dedication to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, as well as our capacity to maintain strong, long-term relationships with our clients.

Throughout the duration of the contract, we have faced numerous challenges while working for Kiwi Rail. These include adapting to new rules, regulations and compliance requirements within the rail corridor; upskilling our staff to meet new training requirements resulting from rule changes; working with Kiwi Rail to complete revalidations to ensure our staff’s competencies are current and maintained; ensuring job satisfaction and good working conditions to retain current staff and attract new staff to the role and rail industry; and upgrading plant and machinery to ensure it is fit for purpose and adapting to changes in work practices.

During this contract, MBD’s quarry crews have supplied Kiwi Rail over 400,000 tonnes of rock from our quarries around the West Coast region. This rock has then been carted and placed onsite for various projects to protect Kiwi Rail’s infrastructure including reinstating rail embankments, track stabilization work and rock protection work around bridge abutments in remote areas such as Cass, Arthurs Pass and in the Buller Gorge.
