Greater Omoto Resilience Project

Contract Duration:

April – August 2021

Contract Description:

This project aimed to stabilize a historically unstable section of hillside that runs alongside KiwiRail’s Midland Line at Omoto, an area susceptible to subsidence.

MBD’s role in the project involved importing and laying 32,000 tonnes of gravel to create a solid foundation. This was a critical first step before the supply, transport, and placement of 57,800 tonnes of graded rock along the bank of the Grey River.

Contract Achievement:

The key objective was to stabilize and reinforce the hillside to prevent further erosion and instability. This was crucial not only for protecting the immediate area but also for safeguarding the long-term safety and integrity of two vital transport corridors—the State Highway and the rail line—both of which are critical to regional connectivity and infrastructure.

The project presented significant challenges as the structure had to be built by extending out into the Grey River. Constructing the structure in such demanding conditions required careful planning and execution to ensure that the final product would be able to withstand the river’s flow and the forces of nature over time.
