Under the West Coast Network Outcomes Contract (NOC), MBD was a crucial member of the emergency response team that successfully reinstated the Waiho River Bridge within 17 days after it was washed away due to heavy rainfall and a declared state of emergency in March 2019. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by West Coast contractors, received the IPWEA NZ Excellence Award for projects under $5 million, highlighting the effectiveness and dedication of the team involved.
MBD’s involvement in the project focused on the critical rock protection work required to restore the bridge abutments on both the north and south sides of the Waiho Bridge. This work was essential to ensure the stability and longevity of the bridge, especially given the erosion risks posed by the surrounding river environment. In addition to the abutment restoration, MBD was also responsible for the reinstatement of the groynes along the river, which play a crucial role in managing water flow and preventing further erosion in the area.
To carry out these tasks, MBD supplied high-quality rock sourced from our Whataroa Quarry, strategically chosen for its durability and suitability for such protective measures. The project required meticulous planning and execution to ensure the proper placement and stabilization of the rock structures, which were key to safeguarding both the bridge and the surrounding infrastructure from future water and weather-related challenges.

We remain committed to ensuring that health and safety will always be at the forefront of our operations as we continue to grow.
