About MBD Contracting

MBD is a born and bred West Coast company and we are very proud of our true West Coast “can do” attitude. MBD Contracting was formed on 1st April 2007, when two existing companies M Wilkins Contracting and Thompson Contracting merged.

MBD’s directors – Darren Richardson, Ben Haddock, Colin Thompson and Murray Wilkins have together over 70 years of experience in a huge variety of contracting work. We specialise in major earthworks projects, roading and civil construction, sea foreshore, river protection, subdivisions and farm developments. We are also the preferred supplier to Kiwi Rail for the supply of hi-rail excavators, civil plant and machinery on the West Coast.
MBD has completed a number of different projects for a wide range of clients including NZTA, Local Councils, Authorities and Private Developers.

Health and Safety

MBD is committed to providing safe worksites for all staff, contractors and the public. Our health and safety system is based on the ACC Workplace Management Practices requirements. We use a health and safety management programme called “The Vault” which helps to meet the required level of compliance by keeping records of personnel, contractors, training, risk management and incident management.

We have worked extremely hard over the last few years to ensure we remain at this high level and pride ourselves on our excellent safety record which is reflected by no serious injury accidents.

We have obtained the following certifications to verify this:

  • ACC Workplace Safety Management Practices – Accreditated to Tertiary Level
  • NZ Site Safe Year Four Membership Certificate
  • NZTA Prequalification for Physical Works
    • 1B – Routine Works
    • 4B – Construction
    • 5B – Minor Works

The primary goal of MBD Contracting is to achieve the highest standards of quality in all business practices and operations without compromise. We have obtained the following certification to verify this:

  • ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System

Environmental

Every endeavour will be made to protect the environment and minimise adverse effects in accordance with our environmental policy. Our goal is to ensure that company facilities and operations are in compliance with all national and local environmental standards and contribute to the sustainability of the natural environment and resources.

We have obtained the following vertification to verify this:

  • ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System

Rail Network

Murray Wilkins and MBD together have over 21 years experience working with the railway maintenance providers. We have been fully committed to the Railways during this time, have an excellent work record and have become highly respected in the industry. During this relationship with the railways, we have been involved with all routine aspects of rail work eg: re-sleepering, re-railing, mudspots, EM80 faults, cleaning out drains, dock and drifting, transposing rail, track tamping, cartage of ballast/gravels etc. We have always made ourselves available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency works eg: slips, washouts, derailments, heat buckles etc.

We have our own call sign Mike Brave Delta (MBD) on the rail corridor which enables us to set up and run our own worksites. All of our hi-rail excavators are fitted with train control radio’s. This allows them to maintain contact with train control and can immediately be advised of any changes on track.

After consultation/requests from the Railways Management, we have designed and built specialised equipment to assist them with their maintenance and cleaning work in the Otira Tunnel. These include ballast washers which rinses the coal dust through the ballast, trolleys to cart materials and equipment to and from site, a 3 tonne excavator that is small enough to turn around inside the tunnel, drain cleaner, cable layer and bridge safety frames. All of the equipment has been designed and built to the Railways specifications and certified by their engineers as well as by an approved independent engineer.
